Selecting the boat you want to build

At Boat Building Vacation you can either choose to build a precut kit from a selection of distributors, or you can build an inexpensive plywood dory with the kit prepared for you by us. Purchase a precut boat through a distributor’s website and have it mailed to us or, if you prefer, you can pay us to order the kit for you.

These are the prices that you will use to calculate the total cost of your boat building vacation. Please add $50 to the materials cost for each additional person working on the same boat kit. Oxford Rowing Shell
The favorite at the Boat Building Vacation. This is a speedy and light weight boat rowing shell. With this option you will leave at vacation’s end with the boat construction completed and ready to row. In a couple weeks time when the epoxies are fully hardened you will have to apply the last couple layers of varnish and sanding.

Chesapeake 17’ Sea Kayak
A kit that is designed for comfort, speed, and rough seas on an afternoon gander. And provides the storage space for multi week expeditions. With this option you will leave at vacation’s end with the boat construction completed and ready to paddle. In a couple weeks time when the epoxies are fully hardened you will have to apply the last couple layers of varnish and sanding.

Shearwater Sea Kayak
A gorgeous kayak with beautiful lines and speed and agility in mind. You can choose a 14’, 16’ or 17’ length to accommodate your weight, height and shoe size. It is faster than the chesapeake, resulting in less stability. It is a tighter fit making it feel more like an extension of your body. It is less of a freight holler, but more ideal for shorter trips or day trips. It is a bit more time consuming to build, so expect to spend long working days. Having an extra person to help build this boat with you is advisable.

Super light weight canoe at 26 pounds. Easy to build LapStitch construction. With this option you will leave at vacation’s end with the boat construction completed and ready to paddle. Flat Skiff 12’ Kit
A substantial sized dory, using cost-effective stitch and glue plywood. Easy to build, strong enough to have a 5 hp outboard motor, and light enough to enjoy rowing. With this choice you will have the project completed and be able to use it out on the lake before you leave.

Annapolis Wherry
A fast recreational shell that is stable enough for rougher sees. And an open hull design allowing for a small passenger in tow, and a picnic basket lunch. Designed to be fit with a piantedosi row wing for sliding seat rowing. With this option you will leave at vacation’s end with the boat construction completed and ready to row. In a couple weeks time when the epoxies are fully hardened you will have to apply the last couple layers of varnish and sanding.

*The kit prices do not include the shipping cost of the boat to BBV. This price varies depending on the specific boat, and wether you order the kit yourself and have it mailed to us, or wether we order the kit for you. A good rule of thumb, is that the shipping costs will be less if we order the kit for you. Regardless of who orders the boat, it must be shipped to BBV for inspection of parts prior to your course start.
